1. Decide if you're ready for a dog. Owning a dog is a 10–15 year commitment. Before adopting, honestly assess your living situation (apartment vs house), daily schedule, family composition, and budget. Dogs in India need daily walks, vet care, quality food, and companionship. 2. Choose between adopting an adult dog or a puppy. Adult dogs from shelters are often calmer, house-trained, and their personality is fully formed — what you see is what you get. 3. Research certified adoption organisations in your city. In India, reputable adoption organisations are registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). In Mumbai, organisations like WSD (Welfare of Stray Dogs) and PAWS Mumbai operate certified adoption programmes. In Bangalore, CUPA and Cessna Lifeline are well-established. 7. Meet the dog in person. Visit the organisation's shelter or foster home to meet your shortlisted dog. If the first dog isn't the right fit, that's okay.
8. Complete paperwork and pay the adoption fee. If the meeting goes well and both you and the organisation are happy to proceed, complete the adoption agreement. Adoption fees in India typically range from ₹0–2,000, covering vaccination, deworming, and administrative costs. You'll receive the dog's vaccination record and health certificate.
9. Prepare your home before the dog arrives. Before bringing your dog home, puppy-proof or dog-proof the space: secure loose wires, remove toxic plants, identify a sleeping area, and buy essentials — food bowl, water bowl, collar, leash, and a bed. For the first few days, give the dog a quiet, contained space to decompress and adjust.
10. Schedule a vet check within 7 days. Take your newly adopted dog to a veterinarian within the first week for an independent health check. Continue any vaccination schedules the shelter has started. Register with a regular vet in your city — having an established relationship with a vet before emergencies arise is important.
